TABLELANDS boxing fans will have the opportunity to watch some of the region’s best talent battle it out in the squared circle as the fourth annual Bryde’s Boxing Gym’s Boxers At War tournament takes place tonight.

The event will be held at the Sports Hall on Walsh Street, Mareeba, and will feature 10-15 amateur fights; with a Bryde’s Boxing Title Belt up for grabs in four of the scheduled bouts.

The main event of the evening will be storied Far North Queensland amateurs Michael Lees and Raymond Cupitt, both of whom share multiple state and national amateur boxing titles between them.

“Mick Lees is a very well-established amateur boxer who will be making the trip up from Cairns,” Bryde’s Boxing Gym owner and operator Wayne Bryde said.

“He has won a couple of prestigious titles and will be looking to impress in what is a fantastic and competitive match-up.

“His opponent Raymond Cupitt fights out of Yungaburra and is coming off a year lay-off, however he is a three-time Australian champion so I’m expecting a strong performance out of him.

“This fight has drawn considerable hype on Facebook and it is shaping up to be an unbelievable main event.”

Bryde said this tournament provides a great opportunity to showcase the abundance of boxing talent Far North Queensland boasts, particularly in Mareeba.

“Mareeba is a very strong boxing community and there’s a clear passion for the sport here, so I love the chance to host events like Boxers At War on the Tablelands,” he said.

“Boxing is going through a resurgence in North Queensland which is great to see, so hopefully this event will be a huge success and I can bring another tournament back to Mareeba soon.

“Boxers At War gives the fighters, particularly up-and-coming prospects the opportunity for greater exposure and that’s really important for the growth of the sport here on the Tablelands.”

Added to the much-anticipated main bout, the remainder of the card will also feature exceptional amateur boxers from clubs across North Queensland.

Bryde said he is expecting a strong crowd on hand and encouraged residents within the region to come to the Mareeba Sports Hall for a night of great boxing.

For those wanting to attend the sweet science event tonight, Boxers At War 4 will start at 6:30pm.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children and can be purchased at the door.

There are also still ringside seats available.
