The Captain Cook Highway has been closed as police search for gunman in cane fields.

Police are searching armed man in cane fields west of the Captain Cook Highway near Dillon Road not far from the Australian Armour and Military museum at Smithfield.

Police are tracking the movements of the armed man in what police are describing as a siege situation.

Specialist police negotiators are in communication with the man.

It's believed earlier in the morning police confronted the man while he was allegedly attempting to break into a building on the highway, he allegedly struck a policeman and then rammed a police vehicle causing extensive damage.

The Captain Cook highway is currently closed  with traffic from the south is being turned around at the Holloways Beach roundabout and from the north being turned around at the Yorkeys Knob roundabout.
