Early this morning a 40-year-old Mareeba woman was injured after the vehicle she was driving collided with a train on Upward Street.

It will be alleged the woman was driving east along Upward Street when she failed to give way at a Railway crossing which resulted in her vehicle colliding with the front of the train.

Despite the seriousness of the collision, the driver of the vehicle was fortunate enough to only sustain non-life threatening injuries.

The Mareeba woman was the sole occupant of the vehicle however the train at the time carrying five passengers including the two drivers, all of which were cleared of any injuries.

Throughout the Cairns region there are a number of Railway crossings, which pose a serious risks to any distracted or impatient drivers.

Police are urging drivers to pay attention and slow down at all Railway crossings regardless of the time of day.

If you do fail to give way at a railway crossing you may be fined between $391 and $522 as well as three demerit points.
