Local boys bring relief
With the south of Australia going through one of the worst fire seasons in recorded history, some brave local tableland boys who were going to be sitting around on Australia day, have packed their bags and heading for the front lines.
With the south of Australia going through one of the worst fire seasons in recorded history, some brave local tableland boys are packing their bags and heading for the front lines.
Garth Lambert and Sean Campman have agreed to do whatever they can to help their fellow Australians currently battling the blazes in the Riverina area of New South Wales near Wagga Wagga.
They plan to cook food and provide water for the exhausted fire fighters who are battling some of the biggest fires in recorded history.
Garth got the idea from a fellow Australian in NSW, who is doing the same and currently lives close to the fires and has been in talks with Rural Fire Chiefs in the area.
“With everything that’s going on I really wanted to help out, to do something,” Garth said.
“I met this man through a facebook page and I decided that this was a good way to help those in need.
“This has all been cleared through the Rural Fire Service.”
There is a lot of uncertainty surrounding donations to fire relief, like when do they get the support? Where does it go? Is it legitimate? With all these questions being asked Garth took it upon himself to personally travel down so he can see who his donations are helping.
Garth has been working away and didn’t have much time to organise the idea, but after appearing on local media the support offered and donation have been enormous
“People have been donating hundreds of dollars and hundreds of litres of diesel,” he said.
“We will be setting up as close as we can to the frontline, in and or around their base camp, wherever they are based at that time.
“We are also buying all the food and supplies down south to help support the locals so we don’t take it out of the community.”
Garth and Shaun are leaving Mareeba this Sunday and are expected to make it to Wagga Wagga next Friday and will start relief efforts immediately.
