ON Friday several tiers of government, as well as the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce, came together to form a COVID-19 Mareeba community taskforce.

At the meeting were representatives from FNQ Growers, Mareeba Shire Council, Mareeba Chamber of Commerce, local Police, Mareeba Hospital, Member for Cook Cynthia Lui, the PCYC, Mulungu Aboriginal Primary Health Care and general practices, the local Ambulance service and other business leaders.

Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President, Joe Moro said the meeting was about looking at ideas on how the Mareeba Shire can recover post-COVID-19.

“The Chamber and the Council decided to bring together some of the key community groups to talk about the impact of COVID-19 on the economy, but also on social wellbeing,” Mr Moro said.

“The Chamber had already started the process with the ‘stay local, shop local, support local’ campaign.

“Council is also going to bring forward a few projects to help with the recovery process.”

Mr Moro said at the meeting they discussed ways to get federal funding through some local lobby groups.

“We know that the community has struggled with some of the local restrictions,” he said.

“We are looking at a few long-term strategies including trying to get some federal funding through some local groups and organisations.“

We are hoping to get some post-COVID-19 funding for the region and get people working again.

“We are planning on coming out of this as strong as possible from a social welfare and economic point of view and to look at some sort of recovery process for the Mareeba Shire.”

After the meeting, Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin said she was happy with how the meeting went.

“Mareeba Shire Council is delighted to partner with the Chamber to lead the COVID taskforce,” she said.“The meeting was very productive, and it was great to hear all the good work that various stakeholders are doing to assist the community during the pandemic.

“We hope to capitalise on their efforts, and by coordinating our work, we will hopefully be able to minimise the impacts the virus is having on our economy and
our community as a whole.”

If residents want to get involved or have any suggestions about recovery for the region, you can email the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce or message via the Facebook page.
