Paige Schofield of Tolga was announced as the Miss Cairns Show and runner up was Rowena Petersen of Mareeba.

Miss Schofield, 18, is no stranger to the Cairns Show having competed in the Young Rural Ambassador competition in 2017 and volunteered with the Showgirl team at the 2017 Cairns Show.

Miss Schofield admitted to being shocked to be named the winner and said that this year’s entrants were all outgoing and inspiring young ladies, whom she was certain could each bring so much to the role of Miss Cairns Show.

The Miss Cairns Show is more than the face of the show – the winner, runner up and entrants are involved in all aspects of the show preparation with public and behind the scenes roles.

The Inaugural Cairns Show Ambassador Ball which was held on Saturday June 8 at the De Jarlais Function Centre was a huge success with over 100 attendees.

The black and white formal affair is set to become an annual event on the Cairns calendar, with all guests raving about the venue, the menu and the entertainment, local band Careless.

Anthony Ball, past Cairns Show Rural Ambassador and competition judge commended the Cairns Show Association for being innovative and continuously hosting events to promote the Cairns community. “No other Show Association in the north invests as much energy and time in making their show a success”, Mr Ball praised Cairns Show President Ian Allen.

The Ambassador Ball celebrated the Cairns Show sponsors, the 2019 Rural Ambassador and Miss Cairns Show 2019; the next generation of advocates and emissaries for the agricultural show movement in Cairns and the surrounding region.

The three-course dinner was interspersed with speeches, judging and announcement of this year’s title winners. Guests partied until late, proof that the event was a true success.

Emcee Trent Twomey of Advance Cairns, said that the Cairns Show is one of Cairns’ most popular events drawing people from all over the region. He said the calibre of entrants and the types of events and activities hosted by the Show Association outside the three days of the actual show are of the highest standard.

In congratulating the Show Association, Mr Twomey said that Advance Cairns looked forward to a closer and long-lasting working relationship.

Thomas Bewick was named Cairns Show Rural Ambassador for 2019. Although reserved and a young man of few words, Mr Bewick said he looks forward to representing agricultural and primary industries and the show as this year’s Ambassador.

Past Cairns Show Rural Ambassadors have gone on to represent North Queensland at the EKKA and national competitions beyond.

Ian Allen, Show President said that the Cairns Show Association is proud to be steeped in traditions having held the annual event since 1931.

He said the Ambassadors Ball is an opportunity to celebrate the success Australia’s largest agricultural show, the sponsors who make the event possible and younger generation of title holders who get out and honk the horn each year.

He said that he looks forward to working with and is proud of the 2019 Rural Ambassador and Miss Cairns Show and feels confident that they will acquit themselves well.

Cairns Show Secretary Manager Carmen Ferreira was happy that the Inaugural Ambassadors Ball proved such a success, saying “it is rewarding to work with people who visualise and bring these types of events to fruition and who want to see Cairns grow and offer different events.” Ms Ferreira said that things are coming together smoothly for the Show in July and that the Wine Awards this Saturday marked the start of the sprint to the Show week.
