Five people killed in plane crash near Lockhart River
Emergency services located the wreckage of a plane at about 1:20 pm on a beach east of the Lockhart River Airstrip.
UPDATED: It's now been confirmed all 5 people on board have been killed.At about 11:30am this morning the Queensland Police Service and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) conducted a coordinated joint search for a missing light aircraft near Lockhart River in North Queensland.AMSA tasked two rescue helicopters from Cairns and Horn Island and AMSA’s Challenger Search and Rescue jet from Cairns to the location.Emergency services located the wreckage of a plane at about 1:20 pm on a beach about 4 kilometres from the Lockhart River Airstrip.
The aircraft thought to be a 10-seater light plane, was last heard from around 9.30 am when it made two attempts to land near Lockhart River.
The plane is registered to West Australian company Aerohire and was used for charter flights, most recently in north Queensland.
It has been confirmed that all 5 onboard have been killed all 5 were from a Cairns Government department.
Currently, heavy rain and wild winds from a tropical low are battering the region.
The current accident is not far from where a passenger jet crashed near the Lockhart river airstrip in 2005.
