WITH recent news surfacing of a petition having been established by Kuranda resident Jax Bergersen for the Mareeba Shire to return to a divisional council model, Mareeba Shire Council have provided figures highlighting the funding Kuranda has received since de-amalgamation in 2012-13.

The Mareeba Shire Council has spent $20,651,932 on capital expenditure since de-amalgamation, of which does not include everyday operational costs.

Some of Mareeba Shire Council’s most notable investments in the Kuranda community over the past seven years include more than $1 million for the second reservoir on Myola Road, $696,000 for improvements to the Kuranda Information Centre, and a further $990,000 for the Grove Creek Bridge Renewal.

“While we are aware a petition is being circulated, Council has not considered the matter of divisions and will await the petition being presented to Council - which we understand will be at the next Council meeting,” a Council spokesman said.

The next Mareeba Shire Council meeting is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, February 20 at 9am at the Mareeba Shire Council building.
