Queensland schools are set to close from Monday

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has just announced that schools will move to pupil-free days from next week, although anyone with a job would still be able to send their children to school.

“Next week Queensland schools will move to student free days ... schools will remain open to allow children of essential workers and vulnerable children to remain at school,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

The ruling applies to all schools, not just state schools.

Queensland Education Minister Grace Grace said, “Schools are open for essential workers and workers required in the workplace,” Ms Grace said.

“It’s important for teachers to be given the time to plan for what may be needed in the future.”

The principal of Mareeba State High school Scott Whybird said teachers will still be at school next week

“We now have 5 student-free days allocated for next week, teachers will be working on how we can provide school work to people who won’t be coming to school,

“The school is still open to families of essential workers and vulnerable children,

“At the moment if kids can stay at home they probably should as that would be the best situation,

“If parents do need to send their children to school, there won’t be any classes,  teachers will be providing more of a supervisory role”

“In the next week, the staff at Mareeba State High School will be working on ways to ensure students will be engaged in learning during term 2 in this uncertain time." Mr Whybird said

“We will also continue to update you around any changes to processes through Parent Net and Facebook. The current situation is schools will be opening at the end of the school holidays, the April 20”

Health Minister Steven Miles said the state could have lost up to 30 per cent of its health staff if schools had completely closed.

“It’s incredibly important that our health staff continue to be able to send their children to school,” he said.

Packs of schoolwork are already available to parents and students in line with the national curriculum for each year level and answers available for parents to help them with their child’s learning.

For students not attending school, resources will continue to be updated at https://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/learning-at-home .
