Rod Marti, a former councillor at the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC), has announced his intention to enter the race for TRC mayor in the upcoming local government elections.

Mr Marti says he wants to bring the council back to its core business. “We have to focus and invest in those things that local government must do. I’d put managing our road network at the top of that list, with water supplies and waste management a close second.”

“We must respond better especially when sections of roads fail as well as address the medium term by chipping away at sealing gravel roads. We’ve got to remain focussed and get Council’s core business right.”

“A Council I lead will address the current abrogation of responsibility by councillors. If there are policies and procedures that restrict councillor responsibilities, these will be reviewed. A Council that I lead will be a responsible elected body, it won’t get every decision right, but it will be one that turns up and makes its own decisions based on sound advice,’ he said.

“If elected Mayor, "Mr Marti said “I’ll ensure that Council policies and procedures do not unnecessarily impede growth and development of business that’s vital for community prosperity. Ratepayers and applicants are customers, and any conditions sought by Council must be reasonable.”

Between 2012 and 2016, Mr Marti was the councillor for Division 4 which included the town of Yungaburra and significant parts of the Lake Tinaroo foreshore and farm land. “I ran for Mayor in 2016 local government elections and finished second to Joe Paronella”.

“The reason I want to be Mayor is because I think I can do better. I have the business acumen and skills.”

The next council elections will be held on Saturday 28 March 2020, voting is compulsory.
