Well respected educator and sitting Mareeba Shire councillor Angela Toppin announced today that she will stand for the position of Mayor at the 2020 Mareeba Shire Local Government Elections in March.

In making the announcement, Cr Toppin said she would be honoured to be elected to lead the progressive shire, with a strong focus on sustainability, economic development and community wellbeing.

“My vision is to sustain the incredible growth that our council and community have worked collaboratively to achieve in the shire in the past four years,” Cr Toppin said.

“I will focus on providing the platform for our industries to thrive economically and, at the same time, work to ensure we maintain the social fabric of the shire so our families continue to prosper and enjoy the lifestyle that makes our region so great.”

A daughter of migrant farmers, Cr Toppin was born and raised in Mareeba, and went on to forge a highly successful career in the education sector.

She has served as principal in permanent and acting positions at five Far North Queensland high schools including Mareeba (2003-2010) and Cairns State High (2011-2016), the latter where she demonstrated strong leadership to lead more than 200 staff and 1700 students.

Cr Toppin won a seat on Council at the 2016 Queensland Local Government Elections.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time on council and believe I have delivered this role with the utmost integrity that the position requires, with a focus on financial stability, facilitating growth and maintaining and improving the level of infrastructure that is needed to serve our community,” Cr Toppin said.

“The mayoral position is another challenge, but one that I readily accept as it gives me an opportunity to give back to the community that has given me so much support.”

Cr Toppin, a mother of one and grandmother to four, is well known for being a strong, motivational leader, with a track record of accountability, financial stability, team management and ethical decision making.

“My extensive career in education, leading institutions that play a vital role in our community, speaks volumes for the skills, abilities and dedication I bring to Mareeba Shire Council,” Cr Toppin said.

“By far one of the most important things I bring to Council, however, is my passion for this shire.”

Among her achievements in local government, Cr Toppin lists delivering a balanced 2018-19 budget with a rate rise of three per cent (including continuing to build reserves against possible disasters as well as future opportunities), as most satisfying, together with a continued focus on delivering safe, reliable and modern infrastructure, that meet the needs of the Mareeba Shire community.
