Each year, the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal plays a critical role in ensuring that the vulnerable and isolated people in the Mareeba Shire can experience the joy of Christmas.

Cr Toppin thanked all residents and groups who made contributions during 2021.

“There were contributions by individuals and organisations, including the Far North Nomads who organise the Christmas in July event, with gold coin donations collected at entry donated to the Mayor's Christmas Appeal,” she said.

“In the true spirit of Christmas, Mareeba Shire Council would like to help make the festive season easier for those in need through the appeal.

“We want everyone in our community to be able to celebrate Christmas without feeling stressed about not being able to afford the necessities. Assistance provided through the appeal is a gesture of goodwill and that adds a little cheer to what may be a difficult time of the year for some people in our community.”

Each year, Council donates the proceeds of the Mayor's Christmas Appeal to local community centres with those groups then providing Christmas hampers or vouchers to families in need.

“These organisations do a marvellous job of ensuring that that assistance is received by those most in need,” Mayor Toppin explained.

Cr Toppin encouraged those in need of assistance to contact the Mareeba Community Centre, Kuranda Neighbourhood Centre, Julatten Community Centre or the Dimbulah Community Centre.
