ATTENDANCE numbers at this year's show rivaled records set at the town’s 100th annual event held in 2017 as the crowds flocked to enjoy the agricultural exhibits, the pavilions, side show alley and the music and dancing.

The 104th Malanda Show was opened Friday night by Dave and Judy Quillam with the recital of a poem Judy had written about the show.

The Grand Opening ceremony procession was followed by a special supper in the hall for the Queen and Princess entrants, sponsored by Spar Supermarket.

Malanda Show Society Sponsored, Rachel English was crowned the 2021 Dairy Queen on the night and the Dairy Princess tiara was placed the head of 16 year old Chloe Robertson, who was sponsored by Kenny Road Quarry.

Everyone danced until midnight to Jacynta'lee and partied on again Saturday night to the music of Careless. People were having so much fun in fact, that when the show-grounds power pole blew a fuse both nights, everyone just carried on regardless, hardly even noticing the outage.

Families came from as far as Georgetown, Townsville and Cairns to see the animals, booking out the neighbouring caravan park, making a weekend of it in the Malanda mist.

The Poultry section was the largest in North Queensland and entries in the Prime, Stud and Dairy cattle sections were strong.

The horses provided a spectacle for the crowds and Joanne Ellis of Peeramon Clydesdales staged a sled-pulling demonstration centre ring. Blacksmith, Noel Giles from Mackay's fine metal work and Les and Bev Binnie's shed full of old artifacts pulled the crowds and Sunday delivered a lot of fun for the crowd with the "emergency services" themed Celebrity Milking contest and the Farmers Challenge.

New police sergeant surprised many by taking out the Celebrity Milking contest and David and Alan Stokes, Damien Hughes and John O'Connor claimed their third consecutive win, ahead of 15 other teams in the Elders Malanda sponsored Farmers Challenge.

Local horsewoman, Kymberley Cockrem was named Supreme Champion Rider of the show, Jerry English and Tasmin Cuneen were selected to represent North Queensland at the Ekka in the Senior and Junior Prime Judging categories and Adam Fry's hard feather Bantam was awarded Grand Champion Bird of the Show.

In the pavilions, 18 year old Cassia Whitton won Champion Art of the Show with "Lulu" and student Caitlin O'Shea baked the Champion Cake of the Show.

Julie Zuvela's win qualified her to bake for this year's “Fruit Cake to the Ekka” competition and newly qualified engineer, Zac Newland was also a very successful culinary exhibitor.

The Bevan family had a huge year in the dairy category taking out the Supreme Pen of three Cows; the Supreme Junior Champion; the Supreme Intermediate Champion and Champion, the Supreme Best Udder and the Herdsman Award, while Eachamvale were awarded Supreme Champion Bull and Most Successful Dairy Exhibitor and Terese Daley was the youngest exhibitor ever to take out Supreme Champion Cow.

Alan Stokes won the Champion Pen of Three Butchers Heifers, Champion Bullock of the Show went to A & D Ball and Champion Female of the Show went to Brian Harriman.

It was Baronessa Farming’s year again when they managed to again take out Supreme Champion Stud Beef Exhibit of the show with 14 month old Baronessa Beacon 541.

Baronessa Beacon also won Grand Champion Female of the Show, while Russell and Debra Kidd of Maple Downs Murray Grey Stud, Jaggan, won the Interbreed Pair of Bulls and the Grand Champion Bull of the Show.
