Commence operation Tango Mistletoe

QUEENSLAND Police have launched their newest Christmas road safety operation, aptly named operation Tango Mistletoe.

With Christmas edging closer and closer police have been preparing for an increased number of vehicles on the road as families travel to their holiday destinations.

There will be increased police presence on highways and roads with a focus on deterring and detecting speeding drivers and encouraging fatigued driver to take breaks on their long trips.

Queensland Police Assistant Commissioner Ben Marcus urged drivers to take their time when travelling to their destinations.

“With the school holidays now upon us and more of us poised to travel to spend Christmas with our loved ones, we expect to see an increased number of drivers on our roads,” he said.

“Driver fatigue is one of the leading factors contributing to road crashes and can have a direct consequence on your life and those around you.

“I want to urge all drivers planning to travel long distances these holidays to please take your time, because every decision you make behind the wheel counts.”

Acting Inspector of the Tablelands Patrol Group Rob Campbell has put forward a Christmas message for the Tablelands.

“I wish all the readers of The Express and the Tablelands community a safe and festive Christmas and New Year.

The QPS has maintained its activity in assisting Queensland Health with health measures that provide protection.

Police will continue to act with compassion and consideration of individuals while assisting to educate and maintain compliance.

Through the season, I hope everyone can take some time to relax, but to take care when driving as this can be a period where fatal and serious crashes are more likely to occur.

Officers will be patrolling to limit the five causes of such crashes, mobile phone use, speeding, drink and drug driving, inattention and failure to wear seatbelt.

As we move into the new year, the QPS looks forward to continuing to work with partner agencies, service providers and the community to prevent, disrupt, respond to and investigate crime while providing a safe and secure place for all community members.”
