St Stephen’s Catholic College student Olivia Soncin has been awarded the Olympic Change-Maker Award.

The award, previously known as the Pierre De Coubertin Award, seeks to acknowledge young Australian’s demonstrating the Olympic spirit of friendship, sportsmanship and striving for excellence - both on and off the playing field.

Olivia is part of SSCC’s Student Representative Council (SRC) – a group of seniors who work with the principal to promote wellbeing in the school, listening to what students have to say and what can be improved within the school.

“Being in grade 12 and being part of the SRC, it gave me an opportunity to participate more and be part of organising things,” she said.

“This award was something I was always aware of so I was interested in being involved in it – I knew you couldn’t get the award for doing nothing.

“I still didn’t expect to get the award – it’s a bigger deal than I expected so it’s good to be recognised with it.”

Principal Kerry Manders said Olivia perfectly demonstrated the meaning of the change maker award.

“Olivia is a young woman who exemplifies the Olympic Changemaker criteria… she has listened to students, created the change in line with their requests and worked collaboratively with both staff and students,” she said.

“Olivia is a high achiever both academically and in her chosen sport. In addition, Olivia has been a leader of humble strength and commitment this year as president of the SRC.

“This award is a public recognition for Olivia of her outstanding efforts. We are very proud of her and her achievements.”
