LOCAL military historian John Hardy has given people a chance to experience the rich military history that the Atherton Tablelands has to offer with his new tours.

These not-for-profit tours encompass areas across the Tablelands that were of significance during the Second World War and detailing why these areas were important.

Areas of interest include the largest ordnance depot in North Queensland and the site of the largest medical field hospital in the southern hemisphere among others.

Mr Hardy said that these tours have been established after he was consistently approached by members of the public, encouraging him to start the tours.

“We had our first tour last Wednesday and we did a survey at the end of the tour, we got perfect scores, people really enjoyed it,” he said.

“They pick up on a lot and I do as well, it’s not just one way.

“We even finish at the Atherton War Cemetery and do a wreath laying ceremony.”

The tours will be running through June and until the end of July.

For more information on these tours head to their Facebook page, Atherton Tablelands World War II Historical Tour, bookings can be made through the Atherton Visitor Information Centre.
