Mareeba proves to be busiest rural ED

One hundred per cent of category one patients were seen within the clinically recommended times in June.
Kerry Grigg, Acting Facility Manager, said the Mareeba emergency department activity peaks every year during the rodeo
“Every year with the rodeo we have increased presentations for five or six days due to injuries and the huge number of visitors in town,” said Ms Grigg.
On the Monday after the rodeo, the emergency department had 91 people present compared to the usual average of 70 people.
“We certainly had a busy rodeo period,” said Ms Griggs.
“I want to thank all the staff across the hospital for ensuring that the community and our visitors were well cared for during the rodeo.”
The hard-working team at the emergency department includes a group of emergency nurses with over 150 years’ experience between them.
The emergency nursing team is led by nurse unit manager Rose Vallier and team of other emergency nurses with over 150 years of experience in Mareeba Hospital emergency department.
Rose has been with Mareeba emergency department for 19 years and she is joined by Cheryl Shorey (32 years), Jackie Thompson (30 years), Pauline Larkin (30 years), Mary Vicary (25 years) and Sandra Bozzo (20 years).
