DEDICATION: Jim McMurdo has been recognised for his lifetime of service to the Cancer Council Queensland.

JIM McMurdo has dedicated his life to the fight against cancer. Now after more than 50 years of devotion, the Tablelands local has been recognised for his lifetime of service to the Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ).

His dedication to volunteering for CCQ has earned him high praise and the 2021 Lifetime Contribution to Volunteering Award.

Both Jim and his wife Win have been involved with Cancer Council Queensland since 1970 after moving to the Tablelands, however Jim’s life was impacted by cancer many years before this.

Jim lost both his parents to cancer at a young age and survived having bladder cancer himself nearly 20 years ago.

Win said that both her and Jim have been involved with CCQ for nearly as long it has been around.

“When Jim here he went straight into volunteering for Cancer Council Queensland,” she said.

“The both of us have been here together doing it all the time but he was the one that got everything ready.

“We were pushing behind him, Jim was more out there…he only started volunteering for a few weeks and they had him as the secretary.”

Jim has also volunteered his time to other organisations such as Rotary and was a member for over 60 years, holding positions such as secretary and president.

Upon receiving the award Jim felt very proud and happy to be recognised for his many years of volunteering.

“It makes me feel pretty good,” he said.

Just next month Jim and Win will celebrate their 65 years of marriage, Jim’s 90th birthday and Win’s 91st birthday.
