Man extradited to face murder charge

A 25-YEAR-old man has been extradited from Tasmania to Cairns to face a murder charge that arose out of an altercation at the Mareeba Rodeo grounds back in 2019.

Just before midnight on 10 July, 2019 at the grounds on Mareeba-Dimbulah Road, an altercation broke out between two men, then aged 23 and 35.

The 35-year-old Ayr man, who was a show worker, sustained significant head injuries during the altercation and was airlifted to Townsville Hospital where he passed away on 15 July.

On 13 July 2019, detectives charged Kyam Keith Broadby with grievous bodily harm, but this was subsequently upgraded to murder.

Broadby was arrested in Tasmania on a Queensland arrest warrant early last week and travelled to Cairns with detectives on Wednesday.

He has been remanded in custody and is expected to next appear before the Cairns Magistrates Court on 27 April.
