In light of the current COVID-19 pandemic the Mareeba Rodeo Association has decided to cancel the rodeo for 2020.

The decision came after several meetings and discussions amongst the committee to discuss the best course of action; the decision was announced last Monday, March 23.

The Mareeba Rodeo will now join a long list of rodeos across the far north that have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic including Mt Garnet, Laura, Eureka Creek and more.

Mareeba Rodeo Committee President Peter Brown is disappointed that the rodeo will not go ahead but says it is in the best interest for the community.

“It is 100 percent the best decision to make, we took everything into account,” he said.

“This wasn’t just about the Mareeba Rodeo but Queensland as a whole.

“If we can save even one life by cancelling the rodeo, then that's reason enough.”

Mr Brown has stated that they will begin planning for the 2021 Mareeba Rodeo soon making it “bigger and better.”

The highly anticipated Great Northern Bull riding Series that was set to be held in April has also been postponed and a date is being worked on for Early September, The PBR event to be held in Cairns has also been postponed until Saturday, September 28.

In a statement released by PBR they stated that “The health and safety of our fans, competitors, partners, employees and everyone involved in PBR events remains our top priority,” they said.

“We are planning to reschedule the events that have been postponed in Newcastle, Cairns and Sydney for later in the year.

“Under the guidance of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) and the relevant Health and Government authorities we are monitoring this situation.”
