A new sign for tourism
A new sign in Malanda is designed to be an attraction for tourists featuring the town’s most famous animal, the Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroo
Tuesday, September 8 saw the unveiling of Malanda’s latest tourist attraction a cutout sign of three tree kangaroos, at the Malanda Tourist Information centre.
An initiative of The Malanda Chamber of Commerce, the scene was created by artist Marie Martin to help promote Malanda on social media.
The sign is designed to be an attraction for tourists featuring the town’s most famous animal, the Lumholtz's Tree Kangaroo.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by Tablelands Council Mayor Rod Marti, and Division 3 Councillor Dave Bilney.
Gail Barton Secretary of The Malanda Chamber of Commerce said that the Chamber thought that it would be a good initiative for the town as Yungaburra has the Platypus.
“We are known for the Tree Kangaroo and we thought it would be a good way to put Malanda on the map," she said
“We (The Chamber) decided to fund it ourselves; the use of this sign and hashtags is a way of using social media and getting Malanda, The Lumholtz's Tree kangaroo and the visitors centre on top of people’s minds.”
The sign has been well received with tourists stopping wanting to use it while it was still being installed.
Several Tableland businesses helped in its construction including Wongabel Concrete who donated the concrete, Tableland Constructing and Welding who fabricated the frame, and BJS Plumbing and Civil Contracting who provided ‘dial before you dig’ and the holes.
