ONE of the biggest race days of the region is set to land at the Mareeba Race Course this Boxing Day.

September marked the last day of racing seen at Mareeba and after the AGM saw a new committee elected they hit the gound running in preparation for Boxing Day.

With new President Rex Petersen at the reigns, the club is looking forward to a fun and successful race day.

“Everything is looking really good, the venue is in fine condition and we’ve been doing a lot of work to get it up to scratch,” he said.

“We normally have up to about 2,500 people, so if the fans haven’t abandoned us we should be expecting that again.

“It’s a lot of hard work, but I’ve got a really good team without side help as well, so if you get a good team it really boosts your confidence.”

Mr Petersen encourages people to come out and enjoy a day which is sure to be filled with racing, fun, food and fashion.

“Boxing Day is such a relaxed time of the year, no one is worrying about work or even thinking about work,” Mr Petersen said.

“This is the biggest party that Mareeba has for the year.

“There are always so many happy smiling faces.”

This year for the races the upstairs area has been reserved as a VIP section that offers airconditioning, it has been booked out with 60 plus people to be enjoying their VIP treatment.

$2000 worth of prizes will be available in Fashions on the Field, plus there is a jumping castle and ice cream available to keep the kids occupied on a hot summer’s day.

Mr Petersen is aiming to keep the racecourse in as good condition as he can leading into the New Year with new refurbishment projects set to begin in mid-late 2020.

With so much to offer for the whole family to enjoy, make sure you head to the Mareeba Turf Club this Boxing Day for racing, fashion and fun.

Entry is $15 per person and gates open at 11am. For more information visit the Mareeba Turf Club Facebook page or email mareebaturfclub@bigpond.com
