The Maternity Ward of Atherton Hospital now has a Cuddle Cot which was recently donated by Soroptimist International of the Tropical Tableland. (SITT)

Cuddle Cots have been developed to help parents who have lost their baby.

SITT publicity officer Sylvia Edwards said dealing with the death of a baby is an incredibly difficult event for parents.  “The Cuddle Cot has a cooling unit that controls the temperature of the baby so that bereaved parents are able to hold and grieve for as long as they need”

“The cuddle cot is used for babies who pass away from any medical condition. This valuable extra time to be with their loved one assists parents in the grieving process.”

The purchase of the Cuddle Cot was a major fundraising project for Soroptimist International of the Tropical Tableland over the last couple of years. The unit cost $4600 the money was raised by holding Mother’s Day and Christmas Raffles.

Soroptimist International of the Tropical Tableland is a women’s group who meet every second Tuesday for a business meeting at Community Services Tablelands (CST) in Atherton and every fourth Tuesday at 6.30pm for a dinner meeting at the Atherton Hotel where a guest speaker is invited to attend.

Fund raising events are held on regular basis to support women in need as well as provide funds for the purchase of equipment for Atherton Hospital, Carinya Home for the Aged and Oz Care in Malanda.
