The International Soroptimists of the Tropical Tablelands recently compiled and donated 12 Dignity Kits to the Atherton and Mareeba Hospitals.

The Dignity Kits are comprised of items that women subjected to physical or sexual abuse or assault will have the opportunity to access when discharged from hospital.

The kits contain items like a towel, face wash, underwear, a T-shirt dress, a comb, soap and a pair of thongs.

International Soroptimists of the Tropical Tablelands President Mary Lyle feels a sense of pride when supplying kits as when victims come in they are stripped of their possessions and clothing and are often left in a hospital gown.

“To get forensic evidence everything is taken from them, therefore they are left with a hospital gown which after what they’ve just been through is not very dignified,” she said.

“The whole idea was to provide these people with some essentials like clothing and toiletries.

“Just knowing that these kits could be used by your neighbour or people in the community, that’s the good part about it.”
