People living in Far North Queensland and travelling through Cape York can now look forward to improved mobile phone coverage thanks to the federal government’s $220 million Mobile Black Spot Program.
Federal Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch today announced Far North Queensland will receive six new small cell mobile base stations* under the fourth round of the government’s highly-successful program.
He said funding for the six new mobile base stations will be in next month’s federal budget and would be online before 30 June 2020.
“I am thrilled that residents and businesses in Far North Queensland can now enjoy the benefits and opportunities that improved mobile connectivity brings,” Mr Entsch said.
“Improved mobile coverage will help keep our businesses connected, our families to stay in touch and it means we can better access health and online services on the go.
“I have been actively campaigning for these locations and I am particularly pleased to see two locations identified along the Peninsula Development Road.
“This will greatly improve connectivity and more importantly safety along this ‘bucket list’ road.
“This is about listening, acting and delivering for our community.”
Federal Regional Services Minister Bridget McKenzie said the six new FNQ locations reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering 21st century connectivity to Far North Queenslanders.
“Our continued investment in mobile phone infrastructure is proof that we are focused on connecting all Australians no matter where they live,” Ms McKenzie said.
“The Mobile Black Spot Program enables mobile carriers to service areas where it would otherwise not be commercially viable.
“So far the program is generating more than $760 million of new investment including contributions from state and local governments, mobile network operators, businesses and local communities.”
