THE 2019 Mareeba Rodeo saw just its second Hall of Fame inductee as Bill Fossett was recognised for his commitment and extensive involvement with the Mareeba Rodeo Association that spanned decades.

Bill passed away last year – therefore his Hall of Fame induction was accepted on his behalf by his son Graham who travelled from New South Wales for the event.

Bill was one of the Mareeba Rodeo’s most influential figures, and Mareeba Rodeo Association President Peter Brown spoke about the enormous impact Bill had in his more than four decades with the association.

“Bill was an extremely active member who dedicated so much time to the roles of Secretary and President of the Mareeba Rodeo Association,” he said.

“I don’t think too many people realise the amount of work that goes into organising a Mareeba Rodeo – and Bill was someone who devoted every day to ensure it has become the success that it is today.

“In addition, not only did Bill hold a presidency position with the Mareeba Rodeo Association, he also held one within the Australian Bushmen’s Campdraft and Rodeo Association (ABCRA) which is something definitely worth noting.”

Mr Brown said Bill was a no-nonsense type of person who garnered the respect of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

“He was quite an old-fashioned, straight down the line sort of character who was well respected,” he said.

“When Bill spoke everybody listened – and I think that approach was needed for such a tiring and demanding role that organising a Mareeba Rodeo is.”

Bill’s induction into the Mareeba Rodeo Association’s Hall of Fame follows that of Jim Blakeney.
