Last week the historic Gateway Hotel in Byrnes Street Mareeba was sold to the Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group (ALH).

It’s understood that the hotel was sold to the ALH group via Savills Hotels in Brisbane. The hotel had been owned by the Howe family since 2015, with the family carrying out extensive renovations over the past few years.

According to Savills, the family will go back to focusing on their farming operations. Savills Senior Executive Christian Tsalikis said he approached the Howe family to see if they were interested in selling.

“I called the Howe family who said I could present it to a few interested parties and it coincided with ALH who are looking at expanding into areas where they currently don’t have a presence,” he said

“ALH were interested due to the return on investment, it ticks a lot of boxes that they (ALH) look for which is, good retail in a good town where they didn’t have a presence.”

The venue has gone by a few different names over the years including Dunlops, The Highlander, and the Peninsula Pub.

According to David Curry Head of Regulatory and Corporate Affairs at the ALH Group  “We took over the hotel on Monday 21st September 2020, we were pleased to acquire this wonderful property and look forward to continuing to welcome locals and visitors alike,” he said

“The Gateway certainly met our good pubs in great locations acquisition criteria.”

The sale includes include bars, 17 poker machines, beer garden,  restaurant,  dedicated kids area and a drive-through bottle shop.

The ALH Group is the hotel division of Woolworths and owns 300 licensed venues and over 550 retail liquor outlets including Dan Murphys and BWS.
