THE Great Wheelbarrow Race will be getting a new face to lead the iconic event into the future, after long- standing chair, Nipper Brown stepped down.

The position of chair within The Great Wheelbarrow Race Committee is held by a Mareeba Shire Councillor. As Nipper was unsuccessful in the 2020 election, he therefore vacated the position.

In his six years as chair Nipper has made some extraordinary advancements for the annual race by introducing the ‘Dimby Dinner Do’ at Dimbulah and the alternating format of running from Chillagoe to Mareeba every second year.

“I really enjoyed my time as chair and it was really good to be a part of it,” he said.

New Councillor, Locky Bensted has been asked to take over the role and Nipper has already offered Locky his support and words of advice.

“I’ve already had a conversation with Locky and offered my assistance in anyway,” said Mr Brown.

“Even through I’m not a part of the committee or council, I will always be a volunteer on the race.”

The 2020 race would have kicked off this Friday, May 15, before COVID-19 saw the cancellation of this years race.

Competitors now have an whole year to prepare and fundraise for the 2021 event, which promises to be bigger and better than ever.
