THE Department of Transport and Main Roads inspectors teamed up with the Mareeba police last Thursday to help inform visiting nomads of their caravans and appropriate weight distribution.
Scales are used to weigh their vehicles at axel points and used this information to accurately calculate the weight of the vehicle.
From these calculations drivers were informed weather their weight distribution was safe and if not these concerns needed to be addressed.
Manager for Road Safety North Queensland Rachel Coulson says that this process not only helps with souvenir collection but also road safety.
“It’s a completely free service, no enforcement or fines will be issued,” she said.
“It’s all about educating and raising people awareness about road safety.
“Letting the drivers know if their vehicle is safe in case of any unexpected road incidents.
Ms Coulson also expressed concern to local traffic with the heavy influx of nomads
“With more people on the road the likelihood of there being more incidents involving travellers is going to increase,” she said.
“That’s why activities like this are really important because it helps keep everyone safe.
“We have lots of brochures and information available here.”
Ms Coulson would like to advise locals to “be patient” with the nomads.
“They’re traveling in an area where they might not be familiar with,” she said.
“Give them some courtesy and respect them as visitors to our home and to share information regarding poor roads and general information about the area.”
