Lions unite in Mareeba
LIONS and Lionesses from near and far converged on Mareeba at the weekend for 2019 Lions Clubs International District (201Q2) Convention.
LIONS and Lionesses from near and far converged on Mareeba at the weekend for 2019 Lions Clubs International District (201Q2) Convention.
Held over the long weekend, the convention saw local and visiting members from as far as Mackay, Mount Isa and PNG come together for three days.
The festivities kicked off on Friday night at the Mareeba Turf Club with the official opening plus a BBQ and meet and greet. The theme for this year’s convention was ‘gone with the wind’ so a hot air balloon display was available at the meet and greet on Friday night.
The main convention day was on Saturday at the Mareeba International Club and was packed full of guest speakers.
Speakers included Australia Multiple district legal officer David Skinner OAM, Paul Mc- Donald from Ratch Australia, Krista Watkins from Natural Evolution Food and Diabetes researcher Dr Oliva Holland.
Business sessions ran from Saturday morning into the afternoon and also saw a youth forum for the up and coming Leos club, aimed at high school students.
The main focus of the Saturday was the sessions with discussions and forums being held.
The discussions focused around topical issues within the district and about the Lions Club itself. Trade displays plus an array of Lion’s projects and programs were on display during the day.
Saturday night saw a gala dinner with more speakers. The final day was short and sweet with the farewell and BBQ being held at midday on Sunday.
Mareeba Lions President Gary Searle was extremely happy with the weekend.
“The biggest thing about this convention was the coming together of all the Lions and Lionesses,” he said.
“It was like a big family reunion.
“It was great to catch up with all the Lions and Lionesses from across the district.”
Mr Searle spoke about the convention and what it can do for the wider community.
“The convention is a great way to showcase Mareeba and our local businesses and attractions to visitors from throughout the district,” he said.
