WITH 48,000 premature or sick babies born in Australia each year, the impact is significant and traumatic for many – therefore the help of communities is vital in supporting affected families.

Doing their bit recently was Kane and Tonya Mitchell of Mareeba whose 1-year old daughter Makinlee was born premature.

Along with the support of family and friends together they took part in the annual ‘Walk for Prems’ event held in Cairns on October 27.

The 2019 walk, now in its tenth year, saw droves of people flock to the Cairns Esplanade in support of families with an aim to raise money and awareness for premature or sick babies.

Tonya Mitchell raised more than $2,632 and was the fifth highest solo fundraiser in Australia.

Mrs Mitchell’s team, team Makinlee, named after her daughter, also raised $2782, a staggering difference to their initial goal of $400.

Mrs Mitchell was extremely happy with the event and the money she raised and is looking forward to participating next year.

“The event was great,” she said.

“It was so well organised and had a fantastic atmosphere.

“I can’t wait to do it again next year.”

Mrs Mitchell would also like to thank everyone who walked on the day or donated money to the cause.
