FOR those clambering for the opportunity to commemorate the Tablelands’ World War II history, you can do so on Saturday August 9-11 as the Mareeba Turf Club will play host to the Mareeba Military Muster.

This year’s theme is “The Year of the Military Uniform”, and those wishing to attend are encouraged to bring military items to showcase, sell, swap and display such as military vehicles, equipment and anything else military related.

All proceeds raised from the event goes towards ensuring the longevity of the Mareeba Military Muster and the preservation of World War II history here on the Tablelands and right across the country.

The first day of the Military Muster (Friday), of which isn’t open to the public, will allow attendees to set up for the three-day event and enjoy a barbecue in the afternoon.

Saturday and Sunday’s itinerary will see static displays including military vehicles, radios, uniforms and assorted military items.

Both Saturday and Sunday are public open days, with Saturday’s proceedings running from 8am-5pm, of which will include entertainment - while Sunday is from 8am-1pm.

The Muster Bar and canteen will also be available over the weekend.

Mareeba Military Muster organiser Michael Musumeci said he has been pleased with how preparations have been going thus far and is confident of a strong crowd in 2019.

“Preparations have been excellent,” he said.

“We have been able to attract some very different and never seen before in Mareeba military vehicles that played vital roles within Far North Queensland and Pacific campaigns during World War II.

“As it relates to the numbers we expect at the muster, we have received a positive response from the community and hopefully that means we can draw a good showing for our 11th anniversary.”

Mr Musumeci said the Mareeba Military Muster provides attendees with the opportunity to recognise our serving veterans along with those Australians who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War II and in other campaigns throughout the world.

“It’s a chance to reflect and say thank you and help ensure future generations preserve our nation’s extensive and rich military history,” he said.

Mr Musumeci said it’s a cheap, family event which caters to people of all ages. For those interested in booking a display table, it costs $10 and can be booked up until the day of the event.

However, interested participants are kindly asked to book display tables prior to the event. Members of the public are encouraged to make a donation at the gate as their entry fee.
