THE St Stephen’s Catholic College chess team recently won the Far North Queensland Interschool Chess Competition with one student boasting a perfect eight from eight wins.

The four student team went up against some strong competition from both St Augustine’s College and Cairns High to qualify for the state finals in October.

The St Stephen’s team consists of Jack Burnside, Harry Heath, Dante Cadorin and team captain Lago Roche-Maxwell.

Lago placed first in the individual standing after taking out eight perfect wins to help get his team over the line and winning the competition.

The team will now head to Brisbane hoping to improve on their result from last year where they were awarded the second best regional team in the state and seventh overall.

Lago was the second best regional player in the state at last year’s event and is excited to return.

“I’m confident that our team has the ability to perform well at this year tournament,” he said.
