Out with the old, in with the new

DEVELOPMENT: The demolition of the existing Mobil Mareeba premises is currently underway before the new build on a much larger service station commences.

MAREEBA has been at the centre of many major infrastructure upgrades over the past month, and now another project has joined the fray with a local service station getting a major upgrade.

The Mobil service station, located on the corner of Byrnes and Herberton Streets, started construction for their new and improved service station last week, and will continue until late October.

The new Freedom Fuels branded station will feature many upgrades to better allow locals to access fuel and also shop for daily essentials.

The new site will offer a much better forecourt layout for both trucks and cars, better customer parking, a significantly improved shop range and even comes with a full modern café food service.

The request for the development of the site was lodged two years ago and approved by Mareeba Shire Council in April of 2018, with the development only starting this year.

Retail Operations Manager Gary Brady, from Freedom Fuels said the upgrades are necessary to move into the future.

“Our Mobil branded Trinity Petroleum site at Mareeba has served the people in Mareeba and surrounds well,” he said.

“The time has come to make the necessary changes to ensure it continues to do so long into the future.

“We look forward to bringing you the best site in Mareeba.”

As the new station will be significantly larger than the old one the lot north of the service station between Betta Home Living and Mobil was purchased and will be torn down to allow for the new and improved service station to be constructed.

Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Angela Toppin welcomes the new development and believes that it will only benefit the community.

“Council welcomes any development to the Shire that will stimulate the economy and create jobs,” she said.

“I look forward to seeing this get underway and welcome the benefits it will bring to the community.

“Understandably there may be some disruption for residents, however the benefits far outweigh the inconvenience that may come as a result of these developments proceeding.”
