A man has been charged with serious offences after allegedly travelling at high speed in a vehicle through Cairns and the Tablelands last night before crashing.

It will be alleged at around 7pm September 22 a man attended a residence in Mareeba in a silver Commodore and began making threats towards another man known to him.

It is further alleged that he then left the scene and returned a short time later in the same car and pointed what appeared to be a handgun from the vehicle window at the male resident.

The man then made further threats before fleeing in the vehicle. It is also alleged that at around 7.40pm the same evening the same vehicle was involved in a petrol drive-off at a service station on the Kennedy Highway at Atherton.

Police were alerted to the incident and a short time later officers patrolling the vicinity of the Gillies Range at Yungaburra were allegedly overtaken at high speed by the same silver Commodore.

Multiple police then attended the scene and cordoned off the Range before attempting to intercept the car, however it failed to stop.

Police commenced a pursuit of the vehicle down the Range and a tyre deflation was successfully deployed.

The damaged vehicle continued to allegedly travel at high speed on the car's rims on the incorrect side of the road towards Gordonvale before proceeding down the Bruce Highway.

The car then began to head along Mulgrave Road through Woree where it allegedly travelled over a bike lane and through a red light, with additional police travelling ahead of the vehicle to warn other motorists.

Further along Mulgrave near Creedy Street the Commodore crashed into a rubbish bin before stopping against a power pole around 8.45pm.

The male driver allegedly attempted to flee the scene however was immediately taken into custody.

It will be alleged that a search of the Commodore uncovered a bag with a knife inside.

A 25-year-old Trinity Beach man has been charged with three counts of contravention of domestic violence order, two counts of obstructing police and one count each of dangerous operation of a vehicle, possession of a knife in a public place and stealing.
