EVERY month Queensland Cricket acknowledges an outstanding volunteer making them the ‘Volunteer of the Month’.

There is not another more hardworking member of Mareeba District Cricket Club other than President Irene Roy.

Irene has played a vital part in the club’s revival with two successful senior teams plus a women’s competition that had never before been seen on the Tablelands.

Irene can be found every Saturday and Sunday attending any game she can, scoring for Mareeba whenever she can.

Irene was extremely honoured to receive this award.

“I was very honoured when I got the news,” she said.

“It’s a fantastic thing to be recognised for.

“I couldn’t have got here without the wonderful committee I have supporting me, as well as the players because without players, you can’t have a club.”

Irene was the driving force behind the approval and construction of the new ‘Frosty Firth’ Canteen at Borzi Park that was unveiled last month and has recently procured more grants for even more improvements to the ground and the cricket club.

Irene has proven herself to be the steel backbone of the club and hopes to continue to make her district proud.
