MAREEBA’S secondary schools have joined forces to give the 2020 year 12 students the best possible formal experience, with a key message for the public.

It’s all about the seniors and both Mareeba State High School (MSHS) and St Stephen’s Catholic College (SSCC) are presenting a united front with their year 12 formals as they urge members of the public not to attend their events.

After a very trying year, the graduating class of 2020 has fortunately been allowed to proceed with their formals, but under very strict guidelines and procedures.

To allow members of the public to still experience the formals from a distance, the schools have decided to livestream their events and publish photos in print and online.

Parents are still invited to attend the walk-in, however they are not allowed into the venue due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Kerry Manders, SSCC Principal doesn’t want to rob the public of the formal and is doing all she can for the students and the public in the form of a “keepsake.”

“Parents will still be able to see the arrivals and for the members of the community we will be publishing our keepsake in The Express the week after,” she said.

“Our preferred option is always to have a community event, however in COVID times we cannot do that, so we have decided to try and provide the event at a distance.

“We would like to say thank you to the community for supporting us in having an event that is COVID-safe, protects the community and is successful for our students.”

Mrs Manders comments were echoed by MSHS Principal Scott Whybird with their formal being held two weeks after St Stephen’s.

“Like Mrs Manders said it’s about giving everyone the best opportunities and at the moment St Stephen’s are the trailblazers,” Mr Whybird said.

“I hope the St Stephen’s formal is really successful and I hope ours is too.

“This is going to give people a keepsake, an opportunity to feel part of it, something they will be able to keep and always have.”

The SSCC formal is on this weekend, Saturday August 29 while MSHS’s formal is on Saturday, September 12.
