SHOOTERS will get the chance to dust off their rifles and get ready to compete after the Atherton Tablelands Gun Club (ATGC) announced that they will return to competition shooting as of this Saturday, July 25.

The ATGC stopped their competition shooting in early May of this year due to the COVID-19 restrictions; now after being allowed to practice for some weeks they have been given the all clear to resume competitive shooting.

Unlike other shooting clubs the ATGC focuses on shooting targets and often participates in events like trench and skeet shooting which are featured in the Olympics.

However there are a host of other types of shooting events that members participate in to polish their skills.

Shooters are given grades to help them gauge their skills from C Grade to AA Elite, which is reserved for the most skilled members of the club.

The club was garnering up to 50 shooters at their events before COVID-19 closed them down and ATGC Secretary Bradley Price is excited for the competition to resume.

'“It will be great to get back into competition shooting again,” he said.

“Practice is not the same as proper shooting you haven’t got the competitiveness there.

“It’s a very friendly and inclusive sport that anyone can do from young, old or even disabled members can shoot.

“It’s safer than football as long as you hold the gun the right way round.”

The club is open to shooters of all ages and skill levels with some shooters being as young as 12 or as old as 92.

The club partakes in practices every second and fourth Saturday of every month and eager residents are welcome along to try their hand at shooting. For more information on the club and their upcoming competition or practice shoots contact the club via their facebook page.
