Wason wins prestigious AMAQ Medal
MULUNGU Aboriginal Corporation Medical Centre Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gail Wason has added to her stellar reputation after she took out the prestigious Australian Medical Association Queensland’s (AMAQ) Excellence in Health Care Medal.
MULUNGU Aboriginal Corporation Medical Centre Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gail Wason has added to her stellar reputation after she took out the prestigious Australian Medical Association Queensland’s (AMAQ) Excellence in Health Care Medal.
Ms Wason, who has been the CEO at Mulungu for the better part of 11 years, has an extensive career in Aboriginal health and affairs that spans 25 years, of which also includes her role as Chairperson of the Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council (QAIHC).
The AMAQ Excellence in Health Care Medal recognises an individual who has made a significant contribution to improving health care in Australia, and is only granted to one person each year.
Ms Wason said it’s humbling to have been awarded the medal.
“To be able to receive such a prestigious award really means a lot,” she said.
“I was certainly surprised to have won it; there are so many great people who would’ve equally deserved it, so I am extremely grateful to have been recognised in this fashion.
“It’s particularly great to be acknowledged by the medical fraternity, as it is further reassurance that we have the right systems in place for those who utilise our services.”
Ms Wason said she loves her career, as it provides her with the opportunity to help and facilitate change within the Aboriginal community.
“The average person may not see it, but the impact we’re able to have at Mulungu and QAICH on Aboriginal people’s lives is incredibly important,” she said.
“So it’s my aim to continue to work hard along with my team to ensure Aboriginal people throughout Australia are afforded greater health outcomes and more opportunity so they can live fruitful and fulfilling lives.
“That is why my job is so rewarding.”
Ms Wason took time to thank those who have made a significant contribution throughout her career working in the sector.
“First and foremost I want to thank my team, you don’t receive an award like this without the support from an exceptional team, and I’m fortunate to have that,” she said.
“I also want to recognise the pioneering and innovative work done by previous QAICH Chief Executive Officers and board members; they have laid a wonderful platform which has allowed me to succeed in my role as Chair.”
