MAREEBA’S Finnian Weaver received a 2019 Australia Day Award for his outstanding contribution to the community. Finnian was unable to attend the Australia Day awards ceremony and was presented with his community service award last Friday by Mayor Tom Gilmore.

As a member of the Student Council, Finn played an integral role in the creation of a mural encouraging mental health awareness and was heavily involved with the 'Bullying No Way' week. Finn has received many accolades for his service to others including the Bendigo Bank Community Service Award in 2015, '16 and '17 and the Tom Braes Outstanding Community Service Award last year.

The former Mareeba State High Vice Captain was also awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards where, in order to achieve the Gold Medal, Finn had to complete and document 52 weeks of consecutive community service.

In addition, with the support of his twin sister Orla and family, Finn completed the Green Island to Yorkey's Knob Swim and raised over $4,000 for research into childhood illness.

Finn has also dedicated countless hours to Life Saving and hopes to become a nurse – and is on his way to doing so as he is currently studying nursing at James Cook University.
