MAREEBA’S Danae Hastie is ready to help lead the new generation of netballers onto the court after she recently returned from a leadership camp.

Danae has been involved in netball as a player since she was 12 years old, after taking a break during her senior year of schooling, she has decided to return to the sport in a leadership role.

To help accomplish this, Danae attended a Netball Queensland Leaders Conference in Brisbane where she gathered with emerging leaders in netball from all around Australia.

Attending the conference at the end of March gave Danae the chance to view the sport from an outside perspective and really see how she can help shape and grow the newest crop of netballers.

“I haven’t been involved in netball for about four years, so I wanted to reconnect and get back into the sport,” Danae said.

“The conference was all about educating young people and communities on what netball is now and what Netball Queensland is transforming into.

“It is a game that is evolving and there are a lot of new ideas coming in like netball X and walk in netball.”

Since Danae had only previously been involved in netball as a player, this conference gave her the chance to see the sport from new light and a different angle.

“It’s good to look at things differently as a player, to come out of it and see all of the different aspects that happen behind the curtains,” she said.

“I can come back into the club and slide into a position where I can help the young kids improve their leadership skills and love for the sport."

Danae attended the conference with Mareeba Netball President, Michelle Cifuentes, as the Mareeba Netball youth representative.

“Danae is a perfect example, she has played right from the very beginning, into representative football and into our senior competition,” Mrs Cifuentes said.

“Having her as a role model is a huge success for our small association because she has managed to play and experience a large range of competitions in netball."
