AN improved second half wasn’t enough to save the points for the Atherton Roosters in their Cairns District Rugby League first grade premiership match with Suburbs at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium on Saturday night.

In the end it was Suburbs coming away 20-12 winners over the Roosters who were again with out several of their regulars.

The Roosters dug deep and at one stage looked to be heading for an upset win after dominating most of the second half.

Unforced errors from the Roosters allowed Suburbs to pressure the Roosters line for most of the first half and set up a 14-2 lead at the break.

Tries to Gideon Larry and Glenn Dumbrell gave the Roosters a perfect restart and closed the gap to 14-12.

The Roosters were now back in the hunt and playing with alot of energy much to the delight of the local crowd.

But they were unable to maintain the pressure which allowed Suburbs to cross for their match sealing try five minutes from the final siren.

Results of lower grade games played – Ladies Innisfail vs Roosters 44-4, Reserve grade Suburbs vs Roosters 36-20, Under 18 Suburbs vs Roosters 22-10.

This Saturday the Atherton Roosters host Cairns Brothers in four grades from 2.30pm.
