IN the opening round of the Mareeba Men’s Basketball Competition, Stingrays over shadowed the Red Devils 56 points to 62.

Veteran Christy Perks claimed 18 points, with Jerome Gully and Zemekis Hunter among the other stronger contributors for the Rays.

Few of the old guard were on deck for the Devils but still they were still able to put together a solid performance. The youth of Red Devils was led by Zac Myrteza’s 20 points and his keen defensive presence.

Sep Aloia found touch in the second half when some of the younger players caught on to his ability to get free around the rim.

In the second game, emerging young blood, Brennan Collis, sent a 31-point statement out to all rivals in the first round of the Mareeba Men’s Basketball Competition.

With sharpened elbows, Collis looks to be a spearhead inside the paint for a Council squad stacked with versatile guards.

Paul Flanagan had a quite night, perhaps still caught up in the lights of last week’s media attention.

For the Ballers, the two big men, Dean Gallo and Luke Wainwright worked tirelessly, with Gallo’s wobbly ankle in the third quarter a key excuse for the Ballers on the night. Council took the spoils 59 v Ballers 46.
