Bulls primed for finals
THE Mareeba Bull’s men’s Premier Reserves and Second Division teams have booked a spot in the FNQ Football Grand Finals.
THE Mareeba Bull’s men’s Premier Reserves and Second Division teams have booked a spot in the FNQ Football Grand Finals.
The Second Division defeated Douglas United 2-1 at Port Douglas on Friday night.
The Bulls were determined to leave behind the disappointment of missing out on the premiership on goal difference to the Dragons the previous week.
Daniel Rossi and Angelo Tatti Jnr scored a goal apiece to ensure a shot at the trophy, Daniel Ferraro scored for the Dragons but it wasn’t enough.
The Mareeba Bulls Premier Reserves have also booked a spot in the FNQ Football Grand Final by defeating the Stratford Dolphins 5-0 in the major semi-final at Tiger Park.
Four first half goals came from Steven Cater with the cherry on top coming from Robert Pendenza late in the second Half.
The Bull’s Third Division bowed out of the competition at the first hurdle by going down 6-1 to the Southside Comets.
The Mareeba Colts team also had a torrid time in their knockout semi and went down fighting in their 3-1 loss to Leichhardt which puts an end to their season.
On Sunday at Borzi Park the Mareeba Premier Youth had a convincing 5-2 win against Leichhardt and will now take on Edge Hill United for a shot at the final.
The Premier Ladies managed a 1-0 win over JCU in sweltering conditions; there were two very tired teams as they both struggled in the conditions with just one goal separating them.
The Lady Bulls will take on Leichhardt for the chance to play in the final.
The Men’s Premier team just did enough on Sunday to progress to the Major Semi this weekend.
They took on Innisfail United and were one goal up within ten minutes and settled into the match with Innisfail not threatening the Bulls defensively.
While the Bulls had the majority of the possession they failed to put away good chances and allowed the Cutters back into the match.
They eventually drew level and brought the match into extra time, but late in the second period of extra time Wayne Srhoj was brought down in the penalty area.
The resulting spot kick was taken well by Milan Quintieri to send the Bulls into the knockout semi against Leichhardt with a 2-1 win.
The Mareeba United Football Club could have 5 teams playing in the grand finals if they can overcome their final hurdles.
The men’s Premier Reserves and Second Division have already booked theirs it’s now up to the Youth, Ladies and Premiers to give the club five.
All matches will be played this Saturday at Leichhardt from 12 noon.
FNQ Football weekend wrap
FNQ Premiers Edge Hill United had their easiest match of their season at Tiger Park on Saturday night.
The undefeated Tigers showed their class from the outset and within the first 20 minutes were 3-0 up against Leichhardt who had no answer to the Edge Hill’s brilliant combinations and superb movement off the ball.
By the end of the first half the match was over, as the Tigers went into the break 7 goals up and the Lions down to 10 men as team discipline was brought into question.
The Hill sailed through the second half adding another two and Leichhardt also losing another player to seal a comfortable 9-0 win
Tigers Captain Josh De Nittis was lost for words after the match.
“We didn’t think it was going to pan out this way, we had some great sessions this week and the guys were really pumped up for this game,” he said.
“The week off will give us a chance to regroup and salvage some injury issues, this is a great result but we still have room for improvement and another match to go and we’re looking forward to it.”
This weekend Mareeba will take on Leichhardt at 7.30pm in Cairns to determine who will face the Tigers in the grand final.
In the men’s Premier reserve Edge Hill will come up against Stratford for the right to play against Mareeba in the grand final while in the Ladies Premier Division the Bulls will take on Leichhardt with the winner playing Edge Hill United come grand final day.
Edge Hill United willcome head to head with the Bulls in the Premier youth with the winner to face off against Marlin Coast Rangers in the final.
The Men’s Second Division will see Douglas Dragons and Marlin Coast Rangers play off for a meeting with Mareeba in the final.
The men’s Third Division will see Southside Comets take on Leichhardt for the right to tackle Stratford United.
Leichhardt and Stratford will play off this weekend in the Colts Division to take on Edge Hill United in the grand final.
In the Premier Ladies Reserves division JCU is patiently waiting to see who they play in the grand final when Marlin Coast Rangers take on Leichhardt.
