A BETTER second half effort from the Atherton Roosters wasn’t enough to save the points in Saturday’s Cairns District Rugby League premiership match against the Mossman Sharks at the Mossman Showground.

In the end the Sharks won over the Roosters 24-20 after leading 18-10 at the break.

Two tries in the opening ten minutes gave Mossman a perfect start and a lead of 8-0.

A double to winger Pio Sici got the Roosters scoring started before another two four pointers gave Mossman a eight point lead at halftime.

Mossman scored first points after the restart with a try and a penalty conversion to now lead 24-10 with 25 minutes remaining.

From here, the Roosters looked to find another gear and were applying plenty of pressure to their opposition before Darcy Lacey crossed out wide.

Now trailing 24-14, the Roosters were back in the hunt and went close to scoring twice before Nathan Curcio crossed.

Nigel Woodleigh added the extra’s but time had run out on the Roosters recovery.

Overall it was a huge effort from the Roosters who went into the match minus seven of their regular first graders.

Young Roosters under 18 player Keifhai Rosas was strong in his first grade debut against the competition leaders.

Mossman also took the reserve grade points on Saturday defeating the Roosters 40-16.

Mossman head the points table on 20 followed by Yarrabah 18, Innisfail 17, Brothers 16, Atherton 14, Kangaroos 13, Ivanhoes 13, Suburbs 12, Mareeba 8, Edmonton 8, Tully 1.

This Saturday the Atherton Roosters host Kangaroos at Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.
