Seahawks rattle Roosters

THE visiting Yarrabah Seahawks have delivered an upset 28-22 win over the Atherton Roosters in Saturday night’s Cairns District Rugby League first grade premiership match at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

THE visiting Yarrabah Seahawks have delivered an upset 28-22 win over the Atherton Roosters in Saturday night’s Cairns District Rugby League first grade premiership match at the Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium.

Yarrabah rattled the Roosters early with two quick tries and led 12-0 after 15 minutes of play. But to their credit, the Roosters got themselves back in the contest with three tries of their own and went to the break leading 18-12. Again Yarrabah were out of the blocks early for the second half restart with another two tries to put them back in front 24-18.

The visitors were now gathering momentum as Atherton wilted under a hefty weight of errors. Atherton did fight back to trail 24-22 but another in the closing stages gave Yarrabah a six point win.

Although beaten, the Roosters remain in the top contenders on the points table which is led by Bothers 12, Atherton 10, Yarrabah 10, Kangaroos 9, Innisfail 9, Mossman 8, Ivanhoes 7, Suburbs 6, Edmonton 4, Mareeba 4, Tully 1.

In reserve grade, the Roosters and Yarrabah played a 22 all draw after the visitors led 22-12 at halftime.

The reserve grade points table after seven games is Yarrabah 11, Atherton 9, Kangaroos 9, Innisfail 8, Mossman 8, Suburbs 8, Brothers 8, Tully 6, Mareeba 6, Edmonton 4, Ivanhoes 3.

A better second half has helped the Roosters under 18 side to a 36-24 win over Yarrabah after the scores were locked at 18 all at the break. Innisfail and Ivanhoes head the under 18 points table on 13 followed by Brothers 12, Edmonton 10, Yarrabah 8, Atherton 8, Kangaroos 6, Mareeba 6, Tully 2, Suburbs 2, Mossman 0.

The Atherton Roosters play another home game this Saturday and host the Mossman Sharks.
