MONTHS of rigorous training has opened up an opportunity for Mareeba local swimmer Katrina Coffey to compete in the INAS Global Games.

The 2019 International Federation for Intellectual Impairment Sport (INAS) Global Games will be held in Brisbane in October 12 to 19 and will host 70 countries where athletes will be looking to qualify for the 2020 Paralympics.

The INAS Global Games are the largest in the world for the celebration of elite athletes with intellectual impairment.

Katrina has been training hard with Coach June Cotter in preparation for the upcoming games, including participating in the recent Barrier Reef Games.

Katrina’s mother Vickye said

“We are very overwhelmed.”

“She’s doing a lot more training now.

“She’s very disciplined and she doing it all without complaint.”

Being a former member of the International swimming team Katrina is looking in good stride to participate again this year.

“I would like to go further with my swimming,” Katrina said.

“I’d like to thank June; she’s been a big part of my swimming process.

“She’s helped guide me through the process.”

Katrina was chosen to participate in the INAS Games due to her previous swimming times; she will also be attending the National Games on August 23-24.

Coach June Cotter is expecting some good results.

“The times to qualify this year were much harder than last years and she still got in despite being unsuccessful last year,” she said.

“Katrina is very self-motivated; she can pull anything out of the bag.

“I’m very excited to see what she can do.”
