WORKS have begun in Main Street Atherton as the Department of Main Roads (TMR) looks to improve safety in the towns busy CBD.

The new upgrades will include improvement to the zebra crossings near Vernon Street and the Cook Street roundabout, as well as an upgrade to pedestrian fencing near Robert Street along with a new pedestrian facility near Jack Street.

Speed bumps will also be installed in the approach to the zebra crossing between Vernon Street and Jack Street.

A TMR Spokesperson has stated that these upgrades are all done with the interest of public safety.

“We are upgrading pedestrian facilities on Main Street, Atherton, as part of a $17.27 million program of road safety upgrades,” they said.

“The pedestrian facilities near Robert Street and Jack Street will not have zebra stripes when completed, so pedestrians will need to give way to the traffic when crossing at these locations.

“Some on-street car parks will need to be removed to ensure road users have a clear view on and around the crossings.”

The removal of these parking spaces was stated to be for, “the safety of all road users.”

The works will be carried out at night and expect to be completed in August of this year weather permitting.
