Despite a year of COVID, border closures and bans on international travel one local motel has had one of their best years.

The Jackaroo Motel in Mareeba is not only running at nearly 90 per cent occupancy they recently won a ‘Travellers Choice’ award from global review site Trip Advisor placing them in the top ten per cent of motel accommodation worldwide as per reviews on the Tripadvisor web site.

The award states that “Reviews from Tripadvisor travellers place this hotel in the top 10 per cent worldwide.”

Managers Carol and Grant Daly said they believe that they won the award because once people stay they always come back.

“Our reviews are always about how clean our rooms are, how good the breakfast is, we are friendly people with comfortable rooms,” Carol said.

“We get lots of corporate bookings and government departments staying with us and lots of families on their way to the gulf.

“We also get a lot of Indigenous Australians travelling down from the cape who say they feel very welcome here.”

All through the virus lockdown, the motel was popular with road workers and government departments visiting.

Tripadvisor reviews give them an average of 4.5 stars from travellers and the bookings just keep on coming.

“We currently have five staff working here and we are now looking for extra staff,” Carol said.

“During COVID we got all our air conditioners flushed, we have new washing machines and we have just started renovating some of the rooms.’

The motel is so popular The Jackeroo is already booked out for Savannah in the Round and the Agfield days in 2021. They’ve even started receiving bookings from overseas travellers for later in 2021 and there are six weddings already booked for next year.

“Our 2021 is looking very optimistic,” Carol said.
