THE Atherton Roosters have capped off their final home game of the Cairns District Rugby League season in style, by downing the Innisfail Leprechauns 20-18 at Atherton’s Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium on Saturday night.

It was one of the year's biggest boilovers as the energy stacked Roosters took down the second placed Innisfail first grade outfit.

Wins also in the two earlier lower grade games gave the Roosters a clean sweep of celebrations over the visiting Innisfail teams.

In the main game, the Roosters welcomed the visitors to the Stadium with two converted tries in the opening minutes to set up an early 12-0 lead. Both tries were scored by winger Ty Grogan who also booted the conversions.

Innisfail replied with two of their own tries in the lead up to half time which locked the score up at 12 all for the break. Hooker Glenn Dumbrell’s try mid way through the second term pushed the Roosters back in front 18-12.

However, Innisfail soon found the try line for their third try and the score was again locked up at 18 all with fourteen minutes left to play.

With five minutes remaining, a penalty went the Roosters way and it was in a perfect position for Ty Grogan to kick the two match winning points.

Grogan landed the extras which gave him a total of sixteen points for the game. Saturday’s win also retained the John Cole Toyota Mayors Cup for the Roosters with the prized trophy remaining in Atherton for another twelve months.

The Roosters reserve grade side also delivered an upset in defeating the high flying Innisfail side 12-6. In the under 18 match, the young Roosters warmed up for the coming finals series with a 50-20 victory over Innisfail.

Centre Keyarn Porter crossed for three tries in the Roosters total while half Aiden Carson grabbed a double.

The Senior Roosters play their final 2021 premiership games against the Edmonton Storm this Saturday at Edmonton’s Petersen Park
